It’s a scorcher of a summer already, with the mercury hitting 40 degrees Celsius in Mumbai yesterday. The only thing that makes sense now is cotton and open sandals, and here’s what I live in these days. Linen cropped trousers and flowing soft cotton top with a delicious floral print, silver rasta sandals and convenient small bag to carry just what I need. And of course, never without my sunglasses.
I am such a sucker for animal print and camouflage I can wear them everywhere. For a day out on town, here’s a quick and easy look that always works. A straight fit camouflage print shirt dress off Myntra, a textured suede camouflage print jacket (forget where I picked this one up from), tan ankle boots from Lulu & Sky, and a small textured studded bag from Nine West. Like?
A quick smart go to day look. A satin blouse with an intense print–here I have houndstooth and polka dots, in black and white. Black pump sling backs. Deep indigo skinny fit. Small sized sunglasses. Good to go for lunch or just a day of work meetings, you could substitute the denim with fitted black ankle cropped trousers if you want to get a wee bit more formal.
If its a quick meeting up with friends for drinks and dinner, I’m the one who prefers to be in my good old jeans. Sometimes, I might just make the effort to pull out a lovely burnt orange embroidered sleeveless top by Namrata Joshipura, that falls straight to the hips, paired with these skinny fit denims, a simple similarly embroidered motif clutch and my good old favourite golden Kolhapuri chappals.
What’s your quick fix night out with friends go-to look?
A quick trip for me is generally hell to pack for, because of the multiple events and situations one finds oneself in, and the need to carry cabin baggage rather than half the contents of one’s wardrobe. So here’s what I do. For a four to five day trip, three pairs of trousers, indigo, brown, black. One formal pair (Black in this case). Three basic t shirts. One black camisole or lacy vest. One bright pop of colour, the red in this case. One a striped one. And the third a basic plain black. Add a basic black sweater with double sided buttons (simple on one side and shiny Swarovskis when reversed) so you can dress up or down as required. One casual T Strap sandals. One pair of formal black pumps or strappy satin sandals for an unexpected invite out to dinner. That’s it. Keeping the colours neutral lets everything you pack go with every other item in your baggage, with no stress, and you can change combinations to create a completely different look each time. And of course, a couple of really funky neckpieces that can completely elevate a look without adding to the baggage.
Moving quick from day to night? Take a wrap knee length dress in summer colours from Lulu & Sky, add a pair of satin ankle straps in an unexpected purple, add a silver knotted choker and you’re good to go. Works?
Another no think pull it all together quick look for a casual day out, where you want to look just that bit put together is this all denim look. Mid wash jeans in a comfort fit, a soft denim shirt, roll the legs up to expose your ankles, roll the sleeves up to your elbows. These are old, old clothes I’ve had forever but never tire of, although by merit they should have been handed their golden watch and sent into the happy vales of retirement by now.
I prefer to combine denim with brown and tan accents, and that’s what I’ve done here. Add a tan rough stitched belt, a pair of high shoes, and a structured brown bag and you’re good to go. Yes, this is a laptop bag that I end up using as a regular bag most times–because I don’t ever work on a laptop–blame it on the dinosaur I’m, or the klutz I am, end up dropping it, spilling stuff on it, leaving it behind most times. After having lost a couple of laptops in the distant past, I now steer clear of them gadgets outside of the house, except for my phone, which I soon hope to be able to do without too, and switch to an ancient clam shell, push button version, so to finally get offline when I’m offline.
A simple light cable knit pullover from H&M, soft old broad leg denims from Old Navy, so old actually that the Old in the name is actually God’s own truth, tan wedge heels that are good for running around while giving me the precious few added inches that I need, and a small white bag of indeterminate ancestry because I’ve had it forever and ever. This is a look that works in a rush for a casual evening out, and is comfortable and practical. Keeping the palette neutral and pastel works. The make up stays low key for this one–light brown liner and a nude lipper.
Don’t grudge me this last ditch bid to pretend that we have a winter in Mumbai.
